Living organ donors, like those who donate a healthy kidney to someone in need, face numerous challenges following surgery, including painful recovery periods that can keep them out of work for weeks. A group of pioneering surgeons, aiming to improve the recovery experiences of living kidney donors, has developed a new technique for the organ’s removal that uses only a single incision hidden inside the bellybutton. A small, tubelike port, through which a camera and several surgical tools are passed into the abdominal cavity, is inserted into the navel incision.
